Prof. dr. Carola Zillikens

Detection of AGEs with SAF in age-related diseases; an epidemiological approach 

Carola Zillikens, MD, PhD, is Professor and staff member at the Department of Internal Medicine, section Endocrinology, of Erasmus MC University Medical Center Rotterdam, the Netherlands.  She founded and heads the Erasmus MC Bone Center, a multidisciplinary expertise center for patients with complex or rare disorders of calcium and bone metabolism. She is past President of the Dutch Society for Calcium and Bone Metabolism (NVCB, 2011-2017) and a past Board Member of the ECTS (2015-2021) where she chaired the Professional Practice Committee. She chairs the Bone Network of the Dutch Society for Endocrinology (NVE). She is a member of the Steering committee of the European Reference Network (ERN) for rare bone disorders (BOND) since 2015 and member of the Professional Practice Committee  of the ASBMR (2022). Her research topics concern the (genetic) background of unexplained familial osteoporosis, rare disorders of calcium, phosphate and bone metabolism, atypical femur fractures and the role of Advanced Glycation End products (AGEs) in osteoporosis, sarcopenia and other age-related diseases. She is coordinating a Dutch national registry for chronic hypophosphatemia, including TIO and XLH and is a member of the International XLH registry.
