Methylglyoxal and complications: a role of the microbiome?

Dr Hanssen is a principal investigator and practicing internal medicine specialist with a clinical focus on diabetology at the Amsterdam UMC. His research is currently focussed on the role of the microbiome in type 1 diabetes associated auto-immunity and the production and metabolism of methylglyoxal in diabetes. He did his PhD and subsequent postdoctoral training in the lab of Prof Casper Schalkwijk on the role of methylglyoxal in diabetic vascular complications, with additional postgraduate training in the lab of Prof Mark Cooper.
